Leisure Services

Leisure Services started in May of 1993.  It is designed to assist seniors with developmental disabilities stay active in North Vancouver. CISS proposed a recreation program that has helped  CISS seniors become more involved in different types of activities within the community.  The goal is to become involved in one's community and to form new friendships with other community members.

Our consumers are out in the community participating in a variety of different leisure activities. Some people do the same activity each week, while others are still exploring the community and all the great options.

One activity that is very popular among several people is Kathy's ceramics studio.  Many have been going there for several years.

Leisure Services is known for its innovative activities and creativity with getting people involved in their community.  As individuals continue to discover new interests and creative abilities, Leisure Services will be there to assist them in their development and enhance their golden years.

Some activites that individuals have taken part in include knitting, ceramics,  lawn bowling, tea parties, soft ball games, and more.

Individualized Day Services

In 1995, Individualized Day Services (IDS) began in North Vancouver.  When it first started, there was only one individual enrolled in the program but now the program has grown to seven.  IDS' large staff to consumer ratio allows for quality individualized programming in the areas of volunteering, employment, and recreational opportunities for consumers.

The needs, interests, and wishes of each individual are respected and provide direction to their individualized programs.  IDS consumers progress in many areas of their lives, including searching for paid and volunteer employment, improving social skills, and accessing the community.

The consumers volunteer and work at:

·    Red Cross

·    Wild Bird Trust

·    West Van Seniors

·    Lynn Valley Lodge

·    SPCA

·    Maplewood farms

·    Local recycling programs

·    Community gardens

·    Community agencies

      ·    Lynn Valley Mcdonald's

      ·    All North Vancouver recreational centres

IDS assists participants in gaining as much independence in the community as possible.
