Christina, Manager of the North Shore Programs

Our North Shore Programs welcome the new Program Manager Kahir Lalji who is taking over for Christina while she is away on maternity leave.

Leisure Services

Leisure Services started in May of 1993.  It is designed to assist seniors with developmental disabilities be active in North Vancouver. CISS proposed a recreation program that helped the seniors become involved in different types of recreation within the community.  The goal is to become involved in one's community and to form friendships with the other members of the community.

Our consumers are out in the community participating in a wide variety of different leisure activities. Some people do the same activity each week, while others are still exploring the community and all the great options.

One activity that is popular among several people is going to a ceramics studio.  Many have been going there for several years.

Leisure Services is known for its innovative activities and creativity with getting people involved in their community.  As individuals continue to discover new interests and creative abilities, Leisure Services will be there to assist them in their development and to enhance their golden years.

Activities and programs that individuals have chosen to participate in include:

·    Bingo

·    Seniors’ exercise classes

·    Ceramics

·    Classes at the recreation centers (Tai Chi, dancing, etc.)

·    Seniors lunches

·    Lawn bowling

·    Participating in events at local seniors’ centers

Activities that individuals have focused on as their own interests or with developing individual skills include:

·    Painting

·    Going to the library

·    Going for walks

·    Working out at a local gym

Individualized Day Services

In 1995 Individualized Day Services (IDS) began in North Vancouver.  When it started there was one individual in it and has since grown to six.  The high staff to consumer ratio provides them with individualized programming in the areas of volunteering, employment, and recreational opportunities.

The needs, interests, and wishes of each individual are respected and provide the direction of their individualized programs.  IDS consumers progress in many areas of their lives, including searching for paid and volunteer employment, improving social skills, and accessing the community.

The consumers volunteer at:

·    Red Cross

·    Wild Bird Trust

·    West Van Seniors

·    Lynn Valley Lodge

·    SPCA

·    Local recycling programs

·    Community gardens

·    Community agencies

Consumers also participate in:

·    Exercise programs

·    Hiking excursions

·    Computer work

·    Community and cultural events

IDS assists participants in gaining as much independence in the community as possible.

Mountain Ceramics Studio

Every Wednesday morning consumers from the North Shore make their way down to see Kathy, the owner and creative consultant at Mountain Ceramics in North Vancouver.  The consumers have produced many pieces that have been given as presents, sold at craft fairs, and decorated their home.

Kathy has proven to be an excellent teacher and has helped the consumers to learn the techniques and skills needed to complete many projects. She is well known on the North Shore, especially for the eyes she paints on ceramic figurines and animals.  When asked how she learned this talent, she said that she taught herself through lots of practice.  Meeting people and being creative is what Kathy likes about having her own studio and she has worked hard to make it a fun, welcoming place for everyone.

Success Stories

A Story of Growth -by Christina

This consumer joined our IDS program soon after she finished high school in the summer of 1995. She was very well known in our program because of the staffing requirements; 2:1 staffing. She went through many struggles and challenges trying to express herself.  She enjoyed independence and is extremely intelligent but couldn’t figure out appropriate ways to channel that energy. Staff had to be creative and patient developing a program to best meet the needs for this individual.  She learned how to take transit and various skills through volunteering.

Currently she is taking transit everywhere she goes, including IDS and her various jobs.  She does most of this independently from her day program as she only attends two days a week now, down from her past 5 days a week.  Lastly, this consumer was able to move out of her group room and into an apartment where she has a roommate. Everyone is very proud of how independent she now is.

A Story of Determination -by Christina

This young woman is a new consumer to IDS and started in April 2006. She fits very well into our program and recently got a paid job at the Skytrain Station handing out commuter papers.  This individual has to be at work at 7:00a.m. but so far has managed it impeccably.  When she is finished at 9:00a.m., she hops onto a bus and gets to the location for day program, which changes every day.  She is proving to everyone she enjoys being out in the community and her independence is increasing each day.

A Story of Inspiration - by Christina

This individual began attending Leisure Services in January of 1995 at the mere age of 70.  The best way to describe her is that “she just keeps on trekking”.  She is one of the keenest individuals in our program; involved in ceramics, day trips, fitness classes, barbeques, and birthday parties.  She is in great shape and spirits and is one individual who truly enjoys having her picture taken. Recently this consumer celebrated her 81st birthday with staff and friends.
