How IDS in Port Moody Started

Individualized Day Services (IDS) became a program based on the need in the community.  Many individuals with developmental disabilities were finishing high school and searching for a program that would give them an opportunity to work with their interests, needs, and desires.   This new need required a new program.

Day Programs

There are two day programs that run out of Port Moody.  Individualized Day Services (IDS) is an entirely off-site program; it takes place within the community.

Kyle Kitchen

Kyle Kitchen is run by both the individuals and staff.  Although Lee’s team is in charge of operating it, staff members and individuals from other CISS teams have kindly helped out. With everyone contributing over the years, Kyle Kitchen has become a lunch that many of the seniors it serves look forward to.  The seniors praise the variety, great service, and friendliness that Kyle Kitchen offers each week.  Kyle Kitchen takes place at 125 Kyle Street every Tuesday at 11:30am.

Coffeehouse

Every Thursday from 12:15-1:30p.m CISS operates a Java with Friends coffeehouse.  Java with Friends is a great weekly community event that is always filled with lively people.  There is a live musician, dancing, socializing, and a concession. Many of the individuals volunteer there setting up and taking down, at the admission table, with door prizes, and at the concession.  One of our individuals has a paid job to run the coffeehouse.  It is the largest activity run by CISS and is well known throughout the community and Lower Mainland.

Success Stories

A Story of Independence

Sarah is a lovely young lady who began with our organization in 2005. She had accomplished so much in a short period of time. She is a respected board member for Community Integration Services Society and continues to take courses to assist her in this important role. She works part-time at A&W in Coquitlam. Her soft smile and gentle voice is a welcome addition to the restaurant and its’ customers. Sarah continues to grow and learn from her experiences at our organization and her independence has helped her use transit on her own. She is the one to watch!

A Story of Working Hard and Playing Hard

Quentin has been with Community Integration Services Society since December 2005. He has volunteered right from the beginning and is an integral part of the Coffee House team. He also volunteers at Kyle Kitchen each week, serving seniors, helps out at the animal shelter, does recycling, and in the past, stocked shelves for B&J Auto Parts. Just recently, he has started working each Friday at the Port Moody Volkswagon dealership washing cars. He is also showing one of his peers the job and between the two of them, wash 20 to 30 cars a shift!
Quentin takes his music very seriously as he is a talented musician himself. Each week, he talks about his music sessions with his friends and family.
He also enjoys bowling, baseball, discussing cars and motorcycles with his friends, playing video games, and playing pool in his spare time.

A Story of Dedication

Dan is a very important volunteer at Community Integration Services Society’s weekly Coffee House Java with Friends. Every Thursday, Dan, along with a fellow volunteer selling admission tickets to our customers. Dan enjoys greeting the regular customers each week. His confidence and pride in a job well done has been a huge step in his independent living skills. Every Friday, Dan has a paid position for Java with Friends making bank deposits from the previous day’s event. Dan likes dressing in his best business attire for this job; he takes his work very seriously. Dan enjoys making the bank deposits and getting to know the bank tellers. He usually arrives to the head office and stays for a short while, has a cup of coffee, and then is all business when it’s time to perform his banking duties. We appreciate and rely on Dan to make the banking transactions that are necessary to keep things running smoothly at the coffee house.
